About the work

Margaret Preston was influential in the promotion of modern art in Australia in the early 20th century. She advocated tirelessly for artists to adopt an Australian style, based on Australian subject matter drawn from everyday life, including local landscapes and Aboriginal art. However, it is Preston’s still lives featuring native flora for which she is most highly regarded. In Eucalyptus Preston has pared back detail to emphasise the strong geometric shapes of leaves, buds, blossoms and vase, all set in a tightly-compressed picture space. This strong design approach, combined with a reduced colour palette, illustrates Preston’s commitment to the visual language of modernism.
