Ken Unsworth's Suspended stone circle is from a group of works that he produced using river stones that he collected himself and arranged in suspension formations. Similar work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1978, and this particular piece was installed in the Sculpture Triennale in Melbourne and at an exhibition entitled 'Construction in Process in the Art of the Seventies' in Lodz, Poland, in 1981. Suspended stone circle is simple in form but stunning in its visual impact. River stones forming a large ring, two and a half metres in diameter, are suspended from poles and hover just off the ground. Material that has been smoothed and shaped by the course of time is arranged in classic geometric formation, and the wires suspending the stones create a drawing in space and delicately poise the work between the mundane and the magical.
