About the work

Whiteley arrived back in Australia from London with his family in the summer of 1965 and moved to Whale Beach, north of Sydney, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After the English climate, the Australian blue skies, sunny beaches and tanned swimmers impressed Whiteley and the major painting of this time, The Beach (1965) encapsulates this experience. This painting reflects some of these features of this time of living by the beach. After six months back in Australia, the Whiteley’s decided to return to London via Calcutta.
