Thomas Woodruff is a self-proclaimed ‘fabulist’ artist who works from personal experiences, dealing with issues raised by the AIDS crisis, and celebrating the outsider. He worked as a tattoo artist in the late 1980s and subsequently promoted this and other ‘alternative’ forms of image making in his own work and with exhibitions he has curated. His imagery is usually hybrid, ornate and dark, as with this painting of a weeping clown. He has contributed award-winning illustrations to major periodicals in America, as well as designs for book covers for distinguished writers and is the Chairman of the Illustration and Cartooning departments at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has exhibited widely in America and internationally.
