About the work

Decorated with Western Australian landscape scenes, these panels formed part of the decoration for the bulkheads of the dining saloon of the Western Australian state ship the 'MV Koolama'. The ship was built in 1957 by Denny Brothers of Dumbarton, Scotland and plied the Western Australian coast in the 1950s and 1960s. Records indicate Tom Robertson, the designer, was sent to Western Australia to research the local flora and fauna in preparation for the work. The resulting marquetry interpretation of the local landscape is typical of the modernist interior design elements used in the passenger ships of the mid 1950s.
