About the work

This work continues Robert Macpherson's interest in the strata of language in our daily experience. His dismay at the loss of languages and the richness of culturally specific vocabularies has led him to build works of art around vocabularies as diverse as Latin classificatory systems and the languages of mentholated spirits drinkers, the disappearing working class and children. Mayfair reflects this interest in vernacular language, in particular that of Holden aficionados advertising parts and cars for sale. Painted in a bright, road-side sign style, they border on the abstract and speak of the insider-only status of such languages.
