About the work

Scarred For Life presents powerful images of trauma. Their impact is heightened by the titles and annotations beneath each image. The photo-essay format of this work is borrowed from LIFE magazine of the 1960s. This format gives the work an intimate yet documentary feel. Although the scenes in the suite are fictitious, they resemble many people’s childhood experiences. Moffatt reminds us that language has the power to shape us in profound ways.
