About the work

The Kähler pottery initially made functional objects such as stoves. In the late 1880s however, inspired by contemporary interest in ‘art’ wares, Hermann August Kähler started experimenting with lustre glazes for vases. His aim was to replicate a particular red lustre glaze popular in sixteenth century Italy, which he achieved with outstanding success. Kähler Keramic also attracted artists like Karl Hansen-Reistrup to work at the factory and this vase is a fine example of Hansen-Reistrup’s skilled use of modelled animals as applied decoration.
