About the work

I have used this iconic painting by Tom Roberts to highlight that Indigenous people were shearers also. I have kept the original title of Tom Roberts’s painting, Shearing the Rams, because I did not think that I needed to change it in any way because this is a portrayal of history that I know is true. My father was a gun shearer, and my brother was also a shearer… In the Tom Roberts painting, my father is shearing [at] the forefront… with my brother and nephew [in the background], also doing the work (Artist statement 2000).
