About the work

While this drawing is Untitled, its subject is quite clearly the four figures that were to become Shadow quartet. The artist has drawn the figures in silhouette, as shadows, in a landscape. The landscape is reminiscent of scenes from his earlier ‘Drawings for projections’ films also in the State Art Collection. This series of films produced from 1989 to 1996 were made by filming drawings similar to this one, a technique he described as Stone Age animation. This drawing was produced while Kentridge was making the plywood, clay and plaster figures that were cast in bronze for Shadow quartet.
