About the work

Surreal and eerie works by South African-based photographer Roger Ballen sit between strange real-life situations and a carefully choreographed set-up. He photographs ordinary people who collaborate with the artist to set the scene, often contrasting subjects (people, animals, objects, drawings) with each other and making us wonder if there is a hierarchy to their relationship. Tense and melancholy, they also show beauty and poetry of simple interaction.
