About the work

Spirit drawn depicts four young boys at Carrolup Mission standing proudly with their completed landscape drawings of their traditional land in the Great Southern. The work has qualities reminiscent of a photograph that may have been taken and MacDonald has layered the landscape so it sits behind the figures while in parts impeding over the four boys, exploring and presenting the relationship and understanding each one of them had with the land. Spirit drawn is a contemporary reflection upon an important time in Western Australian history and captures not only the Carrolup movement in a historical sense but also speaks of its reignition within Noongar community which is inspiring many Noongar people to paint again (AGWA, 2008)
