About the work

WAIAA 2011 extended label:
Nyapanyapa Yunupingu, born c1945 at Miwatj in north-east Arnhem Land, was until recently best known as a printmaker. Her works of art were graphic and complex narratives that spoke of her own diverse lived experience. Recently Yunupingu’s works took quite a dramatic shift in their direction, a change that was overt in the aesthetic qualities of the work she began to produce. Moving away from narrative based works Yunupingu’s focus rapidly shifted to what could be described as compulsive mark-making. Each of the surfaces she rendered on bark became saturated in white lines, circles and occasional figurative representation.

When Yunupingu began working on acetate film with a paint-pen, a new found freedom to quickly create mesmerising surfaces, exposed her prolific capacity as an artist. She created over 150 fine-detailed acetate works in a very short time, and these became the source material for the projection work, Light painting 2011. Nyapanyapa Yunupingu’s recent creative developments highlight her inherent spontaneity in life and reflect the way in which she both observes and engages with the world around her.
