Robert Gunybi GANAMBARR: artist
Milngurr is made from industrial conveyor belt rubber and earth pigments from the artist’s homelands. The work tells the story of the formation of waterholes in Ngaymil country, northeast Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Salt water, fresh water and the joining of the two are important subjects for the artist. They are a part of his deep cultural knowledge of Country and Yolngu culture. Together they shape his identity and his art.
Ganambarr and his peers are responsible for a new, experimental style of Yolngu art. While staying true to traditional Yolngu storytelling conventions, Ganamabarr also expands them by forging new ways of mark-making and using found objects.
