About the work

The artist imagines what activities the inhabitants of the Roman city of Pompeii, present-day Naples, took part in, days before and completely unaware that the volcano they were living next to, Vesuvius, was going to bury them alive. Using accounts of ordinary life from around that time, as well as, sometimes, mythologised stories of ritual and debauchery, the artist creates fantasy scenes showing a glimmer of oblivious happiness—if only they turned to stone like this.
