Shore is a major and influential photographer whose solo exhibition American surfaces (1972) brought the categories of the snapshot, the everyday and colour imaging into the art world. Self-portrait, New York, New York, 3/20/1976, 1976 is one of Shore’s few self-portraits and marks a shift in his work from a Rollei 35mm camera to an 8 x 10 view camera which moved him out of the snapshot aesthetic. Shore lies on his bed in a shabby room that reflects his peripatetic life at the time. As he looks directly at his new medium format camera, the work shows his direct engagement with his new approach to image making. It connects with his past too, as the focus on banal surrounds is still evident in this “selfie”.
