A birth in grief and ashes

The two graphite drawings A birth in grief and ashes, 2007 and Forgetting, again, 2008 are in O’Neil’s signature style. They are surreal, fantastic, yet mostly barren, landscapes that twist the pictorial tropes of the European Romantic tradition into spaces of existential fright. As such, they are perfect complements to the work of Australian artists in the Collection such as Arthur Boyd and, most especially, Sydney Nolan whose symbolic landscapes deal with very much the same issues.
