About the work

Soft sculptures by Tarryn Gill were created after an artist residence at the Sigmund Freud Museum, dedicated to the father of psychoanalysis. They directly reference Freud’s daughter Anna, also a psychoanalyst, who used to knit or weave while in session with her patients. They could be monster-portraits of our unconscious, or manifestations of safety-guards we have created for ourselves. In psychology, if something is definable, or visible, it can be confronted, rethought, reshaped and overcome.
