Parlini jilamara (Tunga)
Jean Baptiste (Pulukatu) APUATIMI: artist
A tunga (bark basket) is an all-purpose vessel. It features in Tiwi creation stories (Parlingari) and is believed to be a potent symbol of life. Yet tungas are also central to Tiwi funeral ceremonies, and can be seen draped over a newly erected tutuni (pukumani poles).
The spider-woman made the first tunga used in a Pukamani ceremony (Jennifer Isaacs 2012).
