About the work

Spencer Gore was one of the most important English artists working before the First World War. As the inaugural president of the Camden Town Group, Gore was entirely committed to the Group’s dedication to advancing the cause of modernism in England. In his paintings Gore reduced the shapes of nature to basic geometric forms, coupled with the use of flat, decorative colour. Here, a sense of the space of the picture continuing horizontally outside the frame is reinforced by the forward momentum of the walking figures of the man and dog, who have just appeared from the right and in a few more moments will depart the scene.
