About the work

The series is, two decades on, provocative and representative of the gay rights movement and the issues confronting its front-line activists. From his first solo exhibition in 1976, Secret Love, McDiarmid had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many important group exhibitions that dealt with the issues of sexual identity and politics in Australia. He remarked in 1993: “I never saw art as being a safe thing. I know that exists but that’s not something that involves me.” McDiarmid’s message was about liberation and equality, and it was his response to the impact of HIV/AIDS, from the 1980s onwards, for which he is best known internationally.
