About the work

McDiarmid worked in Melbourne and Sydney from 1972-79 and in New York from 1979-1987. In 1988, he started working at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as a workshop artist and art director. His Toxic Queen (1993) series were originally produced as a magazine-style artist’s book of the same title, a thirty-page, spiral bound work placing false news headlines in hand-cut lettering over appropriated imagery of film stills, gay iconography and newspaper and magazine clippings. It was printed as a series of unnumbered multiples, on a colour photocopier in McDiarmid’s studio. They employ texts of black humour to stark political effect.
