Self portrait: Black bird
Julie DOWLING: artist
A sacred animal for my clan is the Warida (Wedge-tailed eagle). They
have either black or light brown feathers. I also contemplated the song
by Paul McCartney entitled ‘Blackbird’. This song was dedicated to
Afro-American women’s experience. McCartney wrote the song after
witnessing first hand a violent police assault upon a black woman
for sitting in an all-white area while he visited the southern States of
America. His song brought their struggle to a far wider audience. Art is a
good vehicle for social change.
