About the work

I painted this picture after seeing an image by Velasquez in a series
of high definition photographs. I also found images of black people as
slaves in renaissance paintings, so I wanted to blend the two together
in my own self-portrait to make comment about it. I also liked the way
power is shown in portraiture by Goya, Velasquez, Joshua Reynolds,
Wright of Derby, Hogarth, Artemisia Gentileschi, Francis Bacon and
Lucian Freud.
