About the work

Nampitjin grew up in the Great Sandy Desert before moving to Balgo in 1948. She was an esteemed law woman, who initially worked to preserve her culture by assisting in the production of a dictionary of the Kukatja language and engaging with anthropologists in the 1950s. Nampitjin also kept her connection to Country alive through her art. She stated, “I like painting from my heart ... to keep my spirit strong.” Nampitjin’s paintings were distinguished by their vibrant colours and strong patterning. This is her first work in glass, and it depicts the place where Kinyu, the spirit dog, lives. The lines of colour show the tali (sandhills) and the circular shape is the soak Midjul.
