About the work

Farrah Oussuli is a senior Iranian contemporary artist who works predominately in painting. The works on display stem from the figurative tradition and book illumination techniques that flourished in Iran in particular from the fifteenth century, with special reference to the sixteenth and seventeenth century Safavid period. Ossouli also uses Persian poetry throughout her practice and in this instance draws from the Iranian poets Forough Farrokhzad and Ahman Shamlou whose words weave around the borders. The works are from her large Wounded Virtue series which re-draws famous scenes from historical painting and contemporary photography. These works depict the experience of women in zones of conflict.
