About the work

Josef Hoffmann was an important Viennese architect and designer who promoted the English Arts and Crafts principle that art should be integrated into all aspects of life, and that the very best of design, workmanship and materials should be available to the mass market. His early designs reflected the naturalism of Art Nouveau promoted by the Vienna Secession, but he argued with the other members of the group over design principles, and left to found the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903. Hoffmann pioneered the use of abstract and highly simplified geometric designs and the restrained rectangular form of this flower vase together with the use of a grid as the only form of decoration is a typical example of his approach.
