About the work

“This Mamu, he's not like a man. He lives around here, over the other side of the hill country. He's got hooks that if he gets you, he'll guts you out.” Isaac Cherel paints the mamu that hunt around his Gooniyandi country on Fossil downs. He depicts the mamu who hide in the hills, they have long ears so they can hear people from a long way away and they watch people as they move around their country. Isaac Cherel paints in a style that reflects the tribal body paint symbols used for men’s ceremony. He celebrates the creatures of his country and culture and their cheeky ways.
