About the work

Senior artist and cultural leader, Peggy Griffiths, was key in initiating textiles as a new medium at Waringarri Arts and encouraged young women to try hand blocking printing while handing down bush tucker designs and motifs for the artists to use. The Legacy dress represents all her granddaughters who have now become successful textile artists with each layer of the dress made by one of her granddaughters. As such the gown represents the handing down of knowledge by a senior elder to a collective of younger women while simultaneously exploring new forms of expression in fashion and adornment.
