About the work

Prenzel was a leading furniture maker and wood-carver in Melbourne. His work expressed the character of Australian flora, fauna and native woods, capitalising on the nationalist sentiments around the period of Australian Federation in 1901. Prenzel introduced elements of the European Art Nouveau style, with its emphasis on the expression of nature, inot works such as this lively Australian kookaburra figure.
