About the work

(Sir) John Forrest (1847-1918) is a significant figure in the history of Western Australia. Noted as a surveyor and explorer, his achievements in public life also include being Western Australia's first Premier (1891-1901), and the various ministerial positions he held in early commonwealth governments following Federation. This portrait of Forrest was commissioned as part of Western Australia's commemoration of the golden jubilee of Forrest's public service. It was painted in Melbourne in 1915 by Emanuel Phillips Fox, who was regarded at the time as one of Australia's finest portrait artists, and is the last portrait completed by Fox before his death in October of that year. It was presented to the State Art Collection by Forrest in 1916.
