About the work

In 1922, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was invited to create the sixth and final portfolio for the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover. It was a pivotal time for the 27 year old artist, the youngest member of faculty at the Bauhaus. Konstruktionen marks a new style and a technique new to the artist, lithography.

The 6. Kesterner-Mappe Konstructionen was a set of six lithographs and owes a debt to El Lissitzky, whose Prouns, also in the State Art Collection, he admired. However it was Moholy-Nagy's photograms - photographs created by placing objects of varying transparency and shape directly on light-sensitive paper that was the principle inspiration for this suite of prints.
