Self portrait

Frederick McCUBBIN: artist

About the work

This was the last self portrait painted by McCubbin, and its sombre palette is in stark contrast to his many high-key landscapes from this time. McCubbin has not included any indicators of his identity as an artist in this portrait (except perhaps for the beret he wears), so the painting does not present his public face to the world. Rather, it is a powerful psychological study of the artist that encourages the viewer to contemplate the inner life of its subject.
