About the work

The rise of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century – the obligatory travel for wealthy young men to gain exposure to European art and antiquity – created a thriving market for artists. New forms of imagery such as views and caprices, and imaginative as well as accurate renderings of the remains of ancient monuments were popular. Interest in the classical ruins of Rome was particularly high, and Marco Ricci established a career as a painter of fantastic scenes of the remains of Rome’s past. The original from which this print was taken is in the Royal Collection, England.
