About the work

This is one of two portraits Clifton Pugh painted of Margot Knox. "[Margot Knox is] another woman I know very well. I've done two paintings of her - there is one in The Western Australian Art Gallery, Woman with cats. ...It is interesting that both are very dark paintings because there was something in her at the time, something fierce and sharp. To me, this was a conception I had about her even though I knew her very well. The first one, as I said, i used the surround of cats to portray her character." Clifton Pugh quoted in Grimwade, A & Dutton, G 'Involvement - The Portraits of Clifton Pugh' Melbourne 1968
