Artist statement
I am a painter using patterning to explore colour, movement, space and light within the field of organic abstract painting. The patterns I use are boundless and can be perceived to continue beyond the frame suggesting unending repetitions of infinite nature and streams of consciousness. Elements in the work recall perceptions, memories, sounds/music and visual information that is broken down and translated into concentrated visual language.

The process of using repetitive brushstrokes and marks sets up a pace or rhythm within each painting, aiming to draw the viewer into a calm and open state of seeing. Avoiding hard or taped edges, I try to embrace the resulting irregularities, accidents, subtle textures and the ability of oil paint to record the hand painted journey on the canvas. My current use of colour and tonal relationships comes mostly from what I observe in the natural environment and I often take photographs as a record of what I see in different locations.

Layering patterns or fields of colour enables me to find an ‘in-between space’ created by the reaction of each layer to the other. This space is intangible and unpredictable, only emerging when the layers are in harmony with each other – an attempt to find a balance between order and disorder, stillness and movement and a micro and macro view of the world.

Recent works have become more intuitive and loose in structure compared to earlier works which were planned ahead and used mathematical measurements. A freer space is sought through the movement of brushwork and scattered nature of the pattern.
